A Member Resolution to be Presented at the IESL AGM 2017 to Rename the ICT Sectional Committee

Resolution to change the name of the Information Technology & Communication Engineering Sectional Committee of the IESL

Background to the Resolution

The Institute of Engineers, Ceylon, Act, No. 17 of 1968 that incorporated IESL (and amended subsequently as Act, No. 3 of 1996), provides for the formation of Sectional Committees to engage in learned society activities. In the Schedule of By-laws of the IESL, the By-law 98 specifies the presently approved sectional committees that are aligned to different areas of engineering specialization and practice. The engineering specialization of a professional engineer in Sri Lanka is mainly determined by the specialization of the bachelors degree in engineering obtained by the practitioner.

There are 7 state universities under the University Grants Commission (UGC) with engineering faculties offering bachelors honours degrees in engineering.

University of Peradeniya (UoP), Faculty of Engineering offers the Bachelor of Science (Special) in Engineering degree in 6 specializations of Chemical & Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering.

University of Sri Jayewardenepura (UoSJP), Faculty of Engineering has departments of study in 4 specializations as Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

University of Moratuwa (UoM), Faculty of Engineering offers the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering degree in 9 specializations of Chemical & Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering, Textile & Clothing Engineering, Earth Resources Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

University of Jaffna (UoJ), Faculty of Engineering has departments of study in 3 specializations as Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

University of Ruhuna (UoR), Faculty of Engineering offers the Bachelor of Science of Engineering degree in 3 specializations of Electrical & Information Engineering, Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, and Civil & Environmental Engineering.

South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUoSL), Faculty of Engineering has departments of study in 4 specializations as Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Telecommunication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering

Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), Faculty of Engineering Technology offers the Bachelor of Technology Honours in Engineering degree in 7 specializations of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Textile and Clothing Engineering.

In addition, the UGC recognized government university of KDU offers through its Faculty of Engineering the BSc Engineering Honours degree in 9 specializations of Aeronautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering

In the private sector, among the UGC approved engineering degree programs, Faculty of Engineering of SLIIT offers the BSc Engineering Honours degree in 4 specializations as Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

The IESL has 7 Engineering Sectional Committees in the disciplines of Agricultural and Plantation Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, IT and Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering to support the learned society activities of engineers in above specializations.

The table below is a summary of engineering specializations offered by the above listed engineering faculties for which IESL has a corresponding engineering sectional committee.
